what is MMIW?

MMIW, or missing and murdered Indigenous Women, refers to the crisis involving high rates of violence, disappearance and murder of indigenous women and girls in North America.

Indigenous women are four times more likely than non-Indigenous women to be  victims of violence.

High Murder Rates:

The average rate of homicides involving Indigenous female victims was four times that of those involving non-Indigenous female victims.

Unreported Cases

Nearly 84% of indigenous women experience physical and sexual assaults in their lifetime, often going unreported

Missing Persons

Indigenous women represent 10% of the total population of missing women
